He earned his B.A. from the University of Kentucky and his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. After completing a rigorous seven-year neurosurgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, he served four years as a staff neurosurgeon with the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio.
